I’m not a fan of athletes or actors rapping, but Ron Artest does a good job spitting the lyrics to his new song “Champions” at Big Boy’s Neighborhood! (Beamer Benz Or Bently Freestyle). I promise this is the last Ron Artest post for awhile unless he does something crazy at the parade.

Just when I thought Ron had put “crazy” behind him after going all japanese-purple on us, he goes and gets the only person on the Lakers as off as he is, DJ Mbenga to join in. I can see it now, Ron and DJ on the plane and Ron’s like “Yo Benga, my boy Boogie is gonna dye my hair for the playoffs.” You down?” Mbenga responds, “Yes I would love to be apart of a useless cry for attention.” Lakers fans just have to enjoy Artest’s creativity, and how confident he is to play basketball in front of thousands at Staples Center, and the millions watching at home looking like Fozzy the Bear on steroids. Lakers play the Oklahoma City Thunder first round of the playoffs and Artest will be awarded the task of guarding 20-point machine Kevin Durant. The hair only adds to Artest’s defense powers(distraction), so maybe its a good thing.
Nuggets win in L.A. for first time since 07′

Nuggets 126, Lakers 113: The Nuggets were without Carmelo Anthony in Los Angeles facing a Laker team that was determined to make up for the trouncing Denver gave them early in the season. Kobe Bryant in his Zoom Kobe V: Bruce Lees came out the gate on fire racking up 20 points with 9 minutes to go in the second quarter. Lakers led at the half 64-59. Little did the Lakers know but Chauncey Billups was about to GO OFF!! Billups scored 21 points in the third quarter alone, the most against the Lakers in one period since Wilt Chamberlain of the Philadelphia 76ers had 23 in a game in February 1966. Chauncey hit three consecutive 3s to give Denver an 84-83 lead, its first since late in the second quarter. He hit his ninth 3 about 35 seconds later finishing with a career high 39 points and 8 assists. Denver shot 15-22 from deep, and not even the mighty Lakers can beat that.
The Nuggets improved to 2-0 against the Lakers this season, winning by a combined margin of 39 points. In the first matchup Billups had only 6 points on 1-8 shooting. This was the first regular season win in Los Angeles for the Nuggets since April 3, 2007. “We are 2-0 this season, and the Lakers are still best team in Western Conference, World Champs, feel like we can compete with them” Billups said.

The Nuggets bench outscored the Lakers bench 47-37, highlighted by 27 from J.R. Smith. “Huge, to win on their court…we got unbelievable hot, domino effect” Smith said via twitter.
The Lakers are the best team in basketball, but nagging injuries to Kobe Bryant could be something that could lead to trouble down the road. The importance of home-court advantage may come at the risk of a hobbled Bryant who has a pain threshold unlike any mortal, but isn’t as young as he used to be. Carmelo Anthony for example has sat out the last 7 games with an ankle injury similar to Bryants watching his team go 5-2 without him.
Oh, and Ron almost forgot where he was when Joey Graham fouled him hard under the basket.
Hennessy+Artest+Kanye+Iverson=Happy Holidays

I used to drink Hennessy … at halftime,” Artest says in the interview, which hits newsstands this week. “I [kept it] in my locker. I’d just walk to the liquor store and get it.-Sporting News

Ron Artest confesses to drinking liquor at halftime of Bulls games, really Ron, really. In the wild-wild world of @thugraider37 (his twitter name) the notion that he drank Hennessy during half-time seems fitting based on his behavior during his time in the NBA.
What I find intresting is the last time we witnessed a crazy haired celebrity drinking Hennessy,
he ran onto the stage at the VMA’s stealing a 19 year-olds moment. Ron knows all about shocking the audience, and this is just another act in the wild-wild world of Ron Artest and his quest for celebrity.
In related news the “The Anwser” has returned to Philadelphia.
Iverson signed a free-agent contract with Philadelphia on Wednesday, three years after their acrimonious split led to his trade and seemingly ended any chance of his return. Iverson’s brief retirement is over and he’s expected to make his debut Monday at home against Denver.
The Sixers needed a replacement once they lost starting point guard Lou Williams, who’s expected to miss eight weeks after jaw surgery. Williams, who averaged 17.4 points and 5.1 assists, broke his jaw in a loss to Washington on Nov. 24. Iverson, his agent and business manager met with team president Ed Stefanski, coach Eddie Jordan and two other members of the organization Monday to talk about returning.
“Without really seeing him on the floor, I would like to compare him to Brett Favre, a guy who people think is too old to play and he’s almost having an MVP year,” Jordan said. “That’s off the top of my head. When I woke up this morning, I said, ‘Maybe he can be that.’ It’s not a big maybe. I think he can be that.”
Iverson has a career average of 27 points in 889 games over 14 seasons, and is tied for the fifth-highest scoring average in NBA history. He ranks third among active players. He will get a chance to go up against old teams playing Denver and Detroit on back-to-back nights December 7th and 9th. The 76ers will travel to Denver January 3rd, and Detroit on January 9th.
Ed Stefanski referred to Iverson as a “rock star” and his return to Philly feels like the right move. We will try and imagine that he never left at all.
The Truth Sports: NBA Player of the Week
Category Los Angeles Lakers, NBA

36.4 ppg/ 5.2 rpg/ 2.8 spg/ 2.6 apg
This past week for Kobe must have felt like the old days. No Pau Gasol, no Andrew Bynum, just Kobe and and friends. He averaged 26.4 shot attempts a game, and they were all needed. Ron Artest is slowly gelling with the team, and Lamar Odom has his perennial ups and downs. With defeats of the Oklahoma City Thunder and Houston Rockets in overtime on back-to-back nights Kobe scored 31, and 41. He has put up 41 points three times this week, leads the league in scoring and is second in steals. Congratulations Kobe, on being the Truth Sports Player of the Week (11/01-11/08)
Explode the Rockets!!!
Category NBA
The news on Monday that Houston Rockets All-Star center Yao Ming may miss not only the season but never play again comes as a devestating clothesline to the Rockets organization. The Rockets had finally gotten out of the first round of the Playoffs this year, and only needed to re-sign Ron Artest and any NBA center to sew up loose ends. But the Yao injury coupled with the uncertaintiy of Tracy McGrady have left the Rockets with an uneasy feeling. Daryl Morey has been making moves all year. Tracy McGrady is steadily shopped to other teams and the Rockets essentially paid for three picks during the Draft. But is Daryl ready to make the decision he dares to make, and that is to EXPLODE THE ROCKETS! Call it a fire-sale to the rest of the league. Everyone but Luis Scola is available. I exclude Scola because he is the only player that the Rockets should keep. Scola is a rare player, wether starting or coming off the bench he brings a skill set unlike other forwards. Aaron Brooks is still 3 years away from fully carryoing a team, if that is even possible. Shane Battier is a ROLE player, and without Tracy or Yao to complement he is useless. Corner threes and diving for loose balls can only go so far. Brent Barry, Kyle Lowry, Chuck Hayes, and Brian Cook can all start preparing to move. Signing Artest only to trade him even signs like a good move at this junction.
The Rockets gambled on Mutumbo last year, and he returned only to play three games and to get hurt in the last one. Yao has not had a true back-up in years. The constant pressure on Yaos massive and fragile feet has led to this unfortunate moment. Daryl Morey showed up at Marin Gortats home today in Orlando in the hopes of signing the free agent. If the Rockets feel that Marcin Gortat is what the Rockets need, then they are more delusional than anyone could imagine. I’m sure Daryl Morey will make the right decisions when the time comes but the last 5 years have gone out the window. The two people the Rockets have been building the team around are injured. The upside to this depressing moment for Rockets fans is that both Yao and T-Mac are free agents next year. The Rockets seem headed to the lottery without the two, but a top three draft pick plus a key 2010 free-agent could right the ship in one season.
Hard being a Rockets Fan!
Category NBA

Let me start by saying that The Truth Sports is a fan of NBA players. first..Kevin Garnett, Allen Iverson, Tayshaun Prince, Tim Duncan, Shaq to name a few. We try to watch each NBA game without bias towards one team, but during the Western Conference semifinals matchup between the Houston Rockets and the Los Angeles Lakers we are having a hard time not rooting for the Rockets. The Houston Rockets are the absolute definition of an underdog. Rooting for underdogs is something that is done with ultimate sensitivity. The majority of the public is rooting for the Lakers, even native Houstonians that haven’t ever been to Los Angeles. They are fans of winning, and the Rockets haven’t won it all in nearly 15 years. Or they just chose to root for a team that is consistent. 15 years is a small amount of time when it comes to the Chicago Cubs, or the Milwaukee Bucks, but even when Houston was winning back-to-back titles no one outside of Houston cared. Hakeem Olajuwon is a top ten all-time NBA player but the world could care less. Sports Illustrated didn’t even put the Rockets on the cover after they beat the Knicks in the 94′ Finals. The city had to beg for a cover and SI delivered a “special SI” for the city. If the Knicks had won that series SI would have run commercials for championship merchandise around the clock. The Rockets are a team that seem to start off each season with a solid roster “on paper” , but it never ends that way. Rocket uniforms have been donned by Charles Barkley, Scottie Pippen, James Posey, Stromile Swift, Bobby Jackson, and Walt Williams. All of these players had impacts but none of them could get Houston over that hump. The Rockets traded for Steve “Franchise” Francis and paired him with a 7’6″ Asian-born player Yao Ming, but still remained underdogs. Then the unthinkable happened and the “Francise” was traded for a scoring champ, an all-star, the person that would erase the underdog tag from the Rockets. But Tracy McGrady could not fight off the injury bug, and seasons were lost to back, shoulder and knee problems. The Rockets continued to add role players that would help to erase the underdog tag. Shane Battier, and Luis Scola, were all pieces of the puzzle needed to erase the underdog tag. The signing of Ron Artest before this season spelled the end of losing and a return to the mountaintop. The Rockets fought to the 5 seed in the playoffs and after 12 years got out of the first round. This seemed like the ticket to a different level of respect from the NBA, but the Rockets were far from gaining any real respect. The series with the Lakers has seen Shane Battiers face bloodied, Ron Artest elbowed(and called for a foul) and officials that keep their whistles in their pockets when Yao has the ball. Of course a fan of any team feels his/her team is treated unfairly from time to time, but no team is more disrespected, underrated, or simply passed on then the Houston Rockets. Hopefully one day they can again prove the world wrong! GO ROCKETS!
Lets Get Physical!!!
Category NBA

On Wednesday night in Los Angeles the Western Conference Semifinals got physical. Playoff physical. The Lakers suffered a tough lost on Monday, and questions about their toughness arose again, just like in the Finals against Boston last year. Well Kobe Bryant wasn’t going to let his team go down 0-2. Kobe finished with 40 points on 16-27 shooting, but his outstanding play was overshadowed by a barrage of technicals, flagrents, and two ejections. The game got a little chippy following a nasty rejection by Lamar Odom of Luis Scola. The two exchanged words, but the refs(namely Joey Crawford) let the talking continue. On the next trip down Odom was fouled by Scola and the techs started to flow, Scola , Luke Walton, and Odom were all hit with technicals with seconds left in the third quarter. Moments later Derek Fisher anticipating a screen from Scola, applied a football like move sending Scola flying back, and sending Fisher to the showers. With 7:00 minutes remaining in the 4th, Ron Artest and Kobe Bryant fought for a rebound when Kobe threw a quick elbow hitting Artest in the throat. Artest amazingly was whistled for the foul. You could immediately tell Artest was not gonna let this one slide,”I knew I was going to get a technical foul. The point was to let the refs know this guy was elbowing me,” he said. “I know I went over there with no punches, no shoves to the face, just a confrontation. I told him, ‘You’re hitting the wrong person. Don’t you know you’re hitting Ron Artest?’ I’m not retaliating, I’m done with that.” Artest got in Kobes face following the call and was hit with the fastest two techs ever seen, although one technical for Ron Artest counts as two. Ron Artest showed great composure for a person that is labeled as having a short fuse. The NBA VP of Violence Stu Jackson has tons of tape to review. Derek Fisher probably faces the worst punishment in a series that is a long way from being over. Game 3 is Friday in Houston, and look for the refs to take control of the physicality early on. In a series that drew blood in Game1 and double ejections in Game2, we can only expect Game 3 to continue the level of physical play. But if the Lakers thought the path to the Finals was gonna be easy the Houston Rockets have shown in the first two games that its only going to get tougher from here.
