NBA Free Agency: Day 5

Nothing happend on Sunday, due to Independence Day taking all the shine.

On Monday the New York Knicks and Amar’e Stoudemire found each other both alone and worried about their future.

The Knicks said Monday they intend to sign Stoudemire to a contract later this week when the free agent moratorium period ends. Stoudemire’s agent, Happy Walters, said the deal is for the maximum allowed, which would be nearly $100 million over five years.

Wearing a blue Knicks hat, Stoudemire said he looked forward to rebuilding a franchise and bringing the Knicks back to the top .

“I feel great about being a pioneer and showing my leadership,” he said at Madison Square Garden, where signs throughout the entrances showed the player pictured in a Knicks uniform and reading “Welcome, Amar’e Stoudemire.”

Stoudemire has spent his entire career in Phoenix, where he played under Mike D’Antoni before the coach came to New York in 2008. The Knicks desperately needed to come away with something in free agency after spending most of the last two years clearing enough salary-cap space to sign two maximum-contract players.

Now the Knicks have six players under contract for next season!

For the Love of LeBron James.

With the start of the NBA’s free-agent period just three days away, details are starting to emerge about the meetings LeBron James will hold with potential suitors Thursday, when all parties can begin talking.

According to sources and media reports, the meetings with James will take place in northeast Ohio near — but not at — his suburban Akron home. The Bulls, New York Knicks, Miami Heat, New Jersey Nets and Los Angeles Clippers are expected to make pitches to James. There also was talk Sunday that the Dallas Mavericks, who are over the salary cap and only could acquire James through a sign-and-trade, want to make a presentation as well.

The Knicks have the most cap space of all the teams. They can get $34.15 million under the projected cap of $56.1 million. Next up are the Bulls, who can get roughly $29.1 million under the salary cap, followed by the Heat ($27.6 million) and the Nets ($27 million).

Just think if LeBron was to have cameras present, he could turn the entire process into a critically acclaimed reality show. Or LeBron could have each team compete in challenges (VH1 style) and prove which one really is up to the task of aiding James to a championship. Each team that proved its worth, would stepped down and receive a game ball, meaning they were still in the running towards~proving their love to LeBron. Teams that failed would be told by LeBron “You have fouled out, please return to the locker room and collect your things”. ” I have no love for you”.

This show would squash the entire Summer lineup on ABC by the way!

Ex-Knicks Exact Revenge in Rockets Win!

Kevin Martin scored 28 points, Jared Jeffries and rookie Jordan Hill played key roles down the stretch, and Houston rallied to beat the New York Knicks 116-112 on Sunday.

There is nothing like matinée  basketball at Madison Square Garden. The Houston Rockets went up against the New York Knicks in what was Tracy McGrady’s first game against his former team.

Early in the game T-Mac looked to be exacting revenge, playing the entire first quarter and finishing with eight points and five rebounds in helping New York take a 32-17 lead. McGrady finished with 15 points, seven rebounds and five assists in 33 minutes, but was scoreless in the fourth. He missed all three shots after asking to re-enter to play 5 minutes in the final period, even though he was already over his average of about 25 a game.

“When you play with some of those guys for five, six years, you definitely want to go out there and compete against them and show them up a little bit,” McGrady said.

Defense was non-existent in this game. Both teams shot over 50% from the floor. The Knicks held a early 17-point lead, but watched the Rockets bench close the gap by halftime.

David Lee apperaed to strike fear in every Rocket finishing with 27 points and 20 boards. Both Danilo Gallinari and Toney Douglas each scored 26, with Douglas making a franchise rookie-record six 3-pointers in the best game of his career. Unfortunatly Douglas had three turnovers in the final minutes that led to 7 straight Rockets points from Aaron Brooks who finished with 16.

Ex-Knicks Jordan Hill and Jared Jeffries stole the show in place of Luis Scola(upset stomach) and Shane battier(hyperextended knee). Hill finished with a season-high 13 points, while Jeffries, who had been the Knicks’ best defensive player, stepped in to take some crucial charges in the final quarter.

The Garden’s Greatest Villian!!

I have been a BIG Reggie Miller fan for years. When everyone was “Trying to be like Mike” I was wearing stripped wristbands and firing three’s with the skinniest arms ever. Other NBA players have had documentaries and now the “Gardens Greatest Villain” has one.

The film, “Winning Time: Reggie Miller vs. The New York Knicks” directed by Peabody winner Dan Klores played tonight at Conseco Fieldhouse. The film is part of ESPN’s “30 for 30″ series and will be shown March 14th on ESPN. Action centers on the seven-game 1995 playoff series between the Pacers and Knicks. Getting some co-starring screen time: Spike Lee, Pat Riley and Larry Brown.

“Winning Time” is a tightly woven 68 minutes. There are clever transitions from video, to still photographs of the same exact moment and posture. The interviews are so strong, and so numerous, that there’s isn’t any voiceover — none is required. Instead there is powerful music, and testimony of dozens of people who lived those moments, from Patrick Ewing and John Starks to Donnie Walsh and Mark Jackson. (One of the showier moments is when countless on-camera sources, all in a row, say the phrase “presence of mind,” one after another like machine gun fire, in telling the story of Miller’s stepping back behind the 3-point line after getting the steal that made him famous in New York. You know how many interviews you have to do about one subject to get that many people to use the same exact phrase?) Miller is one of the NBA’s most notorious trash talkers and on-court actors, the sort of player you want to see humiliated if he’s playing against your team, but who you loved if you happen to be a Pacers’ fan.

Klores doesn’t have unlimited material to work with, when focusing on the 1994 and 1995 playoff games, but he makes the most out of the available game footage and pre and post-game interviews, cropping game footage, zooming in on game footage, playing and replaying images in slow motion. Then Klores has access to all of the main stars from those great showdowns and many of them seem surprisingly comfortable with the “Crazy Love” filmmaker. Patrick Ewing and John Starks, often considered difficult interviews or personalities, crack jokes and pull no punches. Miller is funny and self-effacing on his own, but the documentary really comes into its own when Spike Lee shows up to talk about his role in the 1994 Game Five, in which the “Do the Right Thing” director did the wrong thing and, with his sideline jabbering, lit a fire under Miller. There’s at least minor disappointment that Klores didn’t find a way to get Reggie and Spike together in the same room for a sit-down, but they might as well be together as they go back-and-forth with their different, coy interpretations of that evening.

It’ll be on ESPN in March (part of the 30 for 30 documentary series).

What’s Up with the Knicks?!

What’s up with the New York Knicks?!

They have been playing in the month of December as if they are actually concerned about this season and not just waiting till the Summer of 2010(in god’s voice). The Knicks on Sunday defeated the Charlotte Bobcats 98-94. New York improved to 10-17 after a franchise-worst 1-9 start and has won both games on a five-game homestand that coach Mike D’Antoni said is important because of the poor start. The Knicks remaining games in December are against the Bulls, Heat, Spurs at home then the Pistons and Nets on the road.

“This is a stretch you have to take advantage of,” he said. “I don’t think it is so crucial that you can’t recover if you just kind of do so-so, but this is one opportunity we have to right the ship, get back in the hunt and we’re doing it so far.”

And they’re doing it defensively, thats right defensively, limiting their opponent below 100 points for the seventh straight game. They are 7-3 this season when keeping teams below the century mark. If the Knicks can cut down on the turnovers, and get consistent play from Wilson Chandler, and David Lee they are tough to beat. A big key is  getting Chris Duhon, to play like he did on Friday and Sunday, each game. He is shooting 78% from deep in the last five games.

Almost forgotten in this month of good play from the Knicks is Nate Robinson, who the Knicks don’t seem to miss, aside from being the first guy off the bench to celebrate a big play. Knicks president Donnie Walsh said before the game he will probably speak to the agent for benched guard Nate Robinson on Monday after a request for a trade. Aaron Goodwin made the request Saturday, and Robinson sat out a ninth straight game Sunday. Funny how a player can be the “toast of the town”, then get benched, then watch his team win without him, get grumpy, then become forgotten.

The pic to the left is LIFE_SIZED!

Because it’s the holidays, and everyone just loves the Nike MVP Puppets, I had to share this one with you. Lupe Fiasco with a dynamite cameo!

Man’s Monday

It’s MAN’S MONDAY!!!

There are four games on the NBA schedule tonight, and starting off is the Denver Nuggets at Philadelphia 76ers. The 76ers are on a 9 game losing streak, and “The Answer” is back in the starting lineup as if we all are experiencing some “twilight zone” experience. The 76ers also play the next 5 at home, which coupled with numerous ticket packages should get the Sixers out of the attendance basement. To the benefit of all NBA fans the game is on NBATV.

In the second game, the Portland Trailblazers travel to New York without Greg Oden for the first time this season. Sad as  the injury to Oden is, it now allows the Blazers to fly in and out of the lane without Oden’s post presence. The Blazers next 4 are on the road, and they should benefit from the adversity on the road re-learning how to play without Oden. They did well last season without him, and Andre Miller wasn’t there.

Golden St. and Oklahoma City, face off for the first time of the year, in the battle of “Future Playoff Teams” The Warriors have played solid following the trade of Stephen Jackson. This game will feature less defense then the Pittsburgh Steelers without Troy Polamalu. Frist team to 100 wins this one. *SideNote=The Ravens-Packers Monday Night Football games starts 30 minutes into this one, so if you are anti-offense flipping over to MNF should fulfill you with the defense you were looking for.

The last night pits to old foes the San Antonio Spurs and the Utah Jazz. Carlos Boozer has been playing as if his “eyebrows” are less heavy. The Spurs have lost the last two, and winning in Utah is about as difficult as solving a rubik’s cube blindfolded.
