OPENING DAY: HIGHS & LOWS

Posted 26 Dec 2011 — by Phillip Pyle

The opening day of the NBA was every bit as exciting as we all hoped it would be. Here is a list of HIGHS & LOWS:

HIGHS:

  • From Elias: Carmelo Anthony’s 37 points is the 3rd-most by a Knicks player on Christmas Day. Only Bernard King and Richie Guerin have scored more for the Knicks on December 25th.
  • Rajon Rondo had 31 points, 13 assists and 5 steals, joining Larry Bird (on Feb. 18, 1985) as the only Celtics players with 30+ points, 10+ assists and 5+ steals in a single game.
  • Brandon Bass had 20 points and 11 rebounds in his Celtics debut
  • Only three forwards in the last 25 seasons have recorded at least 37 points and 10 rebounds in a season opener. LeBron James accomplished this in win over the Dallas Mavericks. The other two players to reach this feat are first ballot hall of famers Charles Barkley who did it three times, and Karl Malone who did it once.
  • Clippers big DeAndre Jordan had 8 blocks, but he also made the LOWS list as well

LOWS:

Mavs banner covered after getting blown out on XMAS!

  • Kobe Bryant really struggled in isolation play types against the Bulls, scoring just 6 points on 13 plays. He shot 3-11 including a combined 1-8 on isolations from the top of the key and the right side of the court. Last year he led the NBA with 643 points in isolation.
  • Rip Hamilton and Joakim Noah finished with a combined 12 points on 6 of 20 shooting.
  • Chris Bosh scored just 4 points, his fewest in a game that he played at least 20 minutes since December 19, 2004 vs the Nets (as a member of Raptors).
  • Lamar Odom had four points four boards in 13 minutes and was ejected in the third quarter.
  • Kevin Durant missed five free throws. He is a career 88 percent free throw shooter.
  • Stephen Curry who was questionable due to ankle injury was 2 for 12 for four points.
  • DeAndre Jordan was 4 of 12 from the free throw line…thus Hack-A-Jordan will continue.

KNICKS: 5 QUESTIONS

Posted 22 Dec 2011 — by @knicks247

The 5 Questions Knicks Need to Answer

1. Backcourt …

We all rationalize the money spent on this frontcourt (Chandler, Amar’e and Melo) but those Knicks fans who are expecting a parade up Broadway better understand the severity of the PG issue. The player most responsible for the pace of the game is either a first year project or NBA rookie. Bibby’s back is acting up and the calls will come for Shumpert and Melo’ to split the PG responsibilities. Expect Shumpert to have some turnover issues but that’s to be expected. Douglas is new to the position but the learning curve in a 66 gm season is very steep.

2. Play of Shumpert, Landry, Harrleson?

Shumpert has Knicks fans optimistic for the future in that wing position. The 6’5′ 220 Guard from Oak Park, IL is showing flashes of a “take it to the rim” attitude that opens up shots for the rest of the team. Shumpert needs to remain confident with his shooting but getting to the FT line 9-12 times can add up quickly. I believe D’antoni will use Shumpert as a primary ball handler with Melo running the half court.

Landry is the current starting 2 for this evolving Knicks backcourt. Landry is much better served giving the Knicks a spark on the bench. Expect Landry to be up to the task, and continue to improve his shot selection. Landry needs to show improvement in defense for this experiment to go well.

Jorts is a nice story to follow but his conditioning needs improvement. If Jorts could attack the rim for boards and shoot the 3 pointer, Knicks fan’s will welcome the Kentucky grad for the time being.

3. Team Defense

Its preseason and it was the NETS offense we’re talking about, but the Knicks look to be focusing on team defense. Melo displayed energy on defense during both preseason games. Chandler is looking to be every thing he was billed to be. Chandler is a big part of this new attitude on defensive. His energy has brought out the best in both Melo and a young backcourt. Chandler should do well in shutting down the paint for the KNicks. Rebounds continue to be a concern until I see Amar’e grab 10-11 per gm.

4. Will Melo be the creator the Knicks need him to be

All signs point to another big year for Melo. After much talk regarding his attitude about leaving Denver, KNicksnation has seen nothing but class and 100% effort from the Syracuse legend. Added touches as the primary ball handler will allow the team to go as far as Melo carry’s them. How Amar’e gm changes remains to be seen. Its obvious from the preseason Stat had been focusing on a 10-15 ft jumper. Lets hope it pays diviends, otherwise the captain needs to get back to playing with his back to the rim.

5. How does this Knicks team deal with adversity?

I wish I could drink from the cup of unabashed optimisim, but in reality the Knicks needs to perform in big games during crunchtime. Last years sweep at the hands of the Celtics should motivate Melo and Amar’e to outstanding performances in the 1st Round of the playoffs, but the bench needs to step up.

Expect the Garden to be rocking on Christmas morning, and I will be joining of millions of Knicks fans eagerly waiting the noon time tip off. All Knicks fans should ask Santa for a win against the Boston GreenMen…I know I will.

2011 NBA DRAFT ORDER

Posted 18 May 2011 — by Phillip Pyle

The Cleveland Cavaliers got the #1 pick, and by all means they NEED it. Back in 2003 the Cavs used their #1 pick on LeBron James. Let’s hope the Cavs do a better job of managing the team, so fans can avoid another 1-hour interview at the Boys & Girls club.

After going from first to almost worst the Cavs have the #1, and #4 pick in the draft.

Minnesota had the worst record in the NBA, but ended up with the 2nd pick in a year where the draft class is less then spectacular. The Timberwolves continued their unbelievable lottery losing streak, falling to 0 for 14 and dropping for the eighth time. They had a 25 percent chance of winning after finishing with a league-worst 17-65 record.

The Utah Jazz also have two picks, #3 and #12.

The Toronto Raptors had the third-best chance at picking first, but instead dropped to fifth.

The Houston Rockets finished exactly where they should have #14. The Rockets also have the #23 pick.

The draft is June 23 in Newark, N.J.

Old School: Bulls vs Rockets. Jordan 45pts/Barkley 35pts

Posted 20 Dec 2010 — by Phillip Pyle
Category Uncategorized

They yapped, jawed and traded barbs. They crashed to the floor together after one under-the-basket collision. They bumped into each other over and over again. And after a timeout, they exchanged a lighthearted head butt. It wasn’t the playground, just two highly paid NBA stars and two good friends, Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley, going at one another on national TV on a Sunday afternoon in Chicago.

“There was a lot of trash talking today, most done by me and Charles. It just adds to the game,” Jordan said after scoring 45 points and leading the Chicago Bulls past Barkley and the Houston Rockets, 106-100. “Charles is not Charles with his mouth shut,” Jordan said. “That’s like me playing with hair.” “You may see us jawing at each other every now and then. I think the fans get an understanding of the competitiveness between us and it’s not done in a nasty way.”

The Bulls uniforms are classic and simple, whereas the Rockets were clad in blue uniforms with silver pinstripes that fade at the end. Quite possibly the worst uniforms EVER!

Highlights of the Video:

Isiah Thomas commentary: “His in that thang today.”(1:25) ”Don’t feel bad Roderick he done that to me too.”  (5:30)

Charles Barkley “Hey thats a foul, I don’t care if he is Michael Jordan.”(3:51)
