Nets, Rockets, Lakers 3-Way Trade

New Jersey has sent swingman Terrence Williams to Houston in a three-team trade that gives the Nets two more first-round draft picks for potential use in a Carmelo Anthony deal.

Williams, who was inactive for the Nets’ 82-77 loss to Philadelphia on Tuesday, is averaging 6.7 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.1 assists in a turbulent season that saw him fined for showing up late for practices and later sent to the franchise’s D-League team in Springfield.

The Nets got the Rockets’ first-round draft pick in 2012, the Los Angeles Lakers’ first-round pick in 2011 and shooting guard Sasha Vujacic from the Lakers. The Lakers get veteran forward Joe Smith in the trade.

Sasha joins his teammate Jordan Farmar in New Jersey, as they await the call that they have been sent to Denver.

On a second deal Wednesday, the Kings acquired Jermaine Taylor and cash considerations from the Rockets in exchange for a heavily-protected, second-round pick, and cash.

Rockets coach Rick Adelman said he’s “not going to rush into anything” and force Williams into Houston’s rotation without first seeing him in practice.

“He can break people down, he can pass the ball, so it’s just a matter of where he fits with the group we have,” Adelman said. “Unfortunately, we have a lot of games in a short time before Christmas. But we’ll see. It will work itself out.”

NBA: 13 Game Recap(10/27)

Wilson Chandler scored 22 points( 8 in the 4th) Amare Stoudemire had 19 points( 7 in the 4th) and 10 rebounds and the New York Knicks beat the Toronto Raptors 98-93 on Wednesday night.  The game was closer then Knicks fans would like. Andrea Bargnani scored 18 points in the first half but had just four in the second for Toronto, which had won eight of its previous nine home openers, and swept the Knicks in all four games last season.

The Boston Celtics were in Cleveland for opening night of the King-less Cavaliers.  Playing its first game in seven years without THE DECISION MAKER, the Cleveland Cavaliers beat the OLD Celtics 95-87. J.J. Hickson scored 21 points, Daniel Gibson added 16 — all in the second half –.  Rajon Rondo lead the Celtics in scoring with 18.  If Rondo leads in scoring, it means one thing, the Celtics are tired.  Since Cleveland beat the Celtics and they beat the Heat is Cleveland the best tema in the East?  I’m joking.

New Jersey Nets gave Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov a win in his first game as their owner with a 101-98 victory over the Detroit Pistons. The Nets outscored the Pistons 13-3 in the final 1:40 to give Avery Johnson a win in his first game as coach — coming much quicker than last season, when they set an NBA record by losing their first 18 games and not getting that first W till December 4th.  Brook Lopez led the Nets with 25 points and nine boards, and Devin Harrisvadded 22 points and nine dimes. Tayshaun Prince, Rodney Stuckey and Charlie Villanueva each had 14 points.

Atlanta Hawks 119 – Memphis Grizzlies 104: The last time the Grizzlies won on opening night was when they were in Vancouver, defeating the Seattle SuperSonics at home, 94-88 on Oct. 31, 2000. … Memphis went 8-0 in the preseason … Atlanta has won eight of its last nine regular-season games against Memphis and is 20-10 all-time against the Grizzlies.

Durant scored 30 points, Russell Westbrook had 28 points and 10 boards and Oklahoma City beat their young Eastern Conference equivalent Chicago Bulls, 106-95 in the season opener for both teams. Derrick Rose scored 28 points to lead the Bulls but sat for a long stretch due to foul trouble.  A late 11-0 run for the Thunder sealed the deal.  Joakim Noah finished with 18 points and 19 boards.

Lakers get rings and show Rockets how to win

Kobe Bryant scored 27 points, newcomer Steve Blake hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 18.8 seconds left, and Los Angeles rallied late for a 112-110 victory over the Houston Rockets on Tuesday night.

Pau Gasol had 29 points and 11 rebounds for the Lakers, who hung the golden banner celebrating their 16th NBA championship and handed out their unique rings in a touching(nohomo) pregame ceremony.

What makes the rings unique is that one of the basketballs used during Game 7 of the NBA Finals was cut up and portions of the leather was used on the underside of the ring.

The champs then fell behind by 15 points before rallying for a fourth-quarter lead behind a 3-point barrage by Shannon Brown, who scored 14 of his 16 points in a 6 1/2-minute span.

Houston took a 108-107 lead with 53 seconds left after Brad Miller’s free throws capped a 6-0 run. Gasol and Scola traded baskets before Blake came open on the perimeter and confidently hit a 3-pointer — the new backup point guard’s third of the night.

Kevin Martin scored 26 points and Brooks had 18 of his 24 in the first half of Houston’s eighth loss in its last nine regular-season meetings with the Lakers.

Yao Ming had nine points and 11 rebounds before fouling out with 6:30 left in his first NBA game since the 2009 playoffs, also against the Lakers. Yao largely looked good in his 24-minute limit mandated by coach Rick Adelman, missing his opening jump-hook and fighting off a season of rust.

The clubs traded the lead four times in the final minute, but  Luis Scola missed a difficult scoop shot with 3 seconds left. After officials used a lengthy video review to award possession of the loose ball to Houston with 2.4 seconds to play, Aaron Brooks’ layup attempt at the buzzer was blocked by Lamar Odom.

It says something about a team that goes for the tie on the road then attempt the three to win the game. The Rockets staters combined for 16 turnovers.

2010-2011 NBA PREVIEW: HOUSTON ROCKETS

The Houston Rockets finished above .500 last season, and 8 wins away from the Playoffs.

This was achieved with Chuck Hayes starting at center.

The additions of Courtney Lee, Brad Miller and Patrick Patterson; the return of Yao; an off-season of Kevin Martin; and the continued development of the youngsters – Chase Budinger, Jordan Hill, and Jermaine Taylor etc. are all essential to the Rockets’ success this year.

Over the last five seasons injuries have ruined what appeared to be an organization on the precipice of something special, a statement used to describe the Rockets every year.

“With a lot of guys like Yao Ming and Shane Battier (nearing the end of their contracts) and the lockout (looming) next year, we’re trying to make this a special year and go as far in the playoffs as we can,” Morey says. “As a non-playoff team, we have to prove ourselves. I think it will take 50 wins to get there. Home-court (advantage) in the playoffs is the kind of goal you shoot for.”

To avoid the injury let down the Rockets have filled the team with players capable of playing multiple positions and newcomer Courtney Lee is capable of being Sixth Man of the Year.

Lee has the ability to play with Aaron Brooks and Kyle Lowry while remaining comfortable with the ball in his hands. You couldn’t say the same for the guy he was traded for Trevor Ariza.

Luis Scola spent the summer leading the FIBA World Championships in scoring, but couldn’t carry his country Argentina to the Finals.  Patrick Patterson and Jordan Hill make for an excellent back-up tandem to Yao Ming and Luis Scola.

Offensively the Rockets are solid. Brooks, Martin, Lee, and Scola are all capable of breaking defenders down and scoring on their man. However, none are best suited as primary options on offense. With Yao’s return the offense changes slightly but more importantly the defense is once again anchored by a 7′-6″ center.

Forward Chase Budinger is the wild-card! We know he will still struggle on the defensive side, but offensively he could be a monster.

Key to the Rockets success will weigh heavily on Yao’s shoulders, but injury-free the Rockets are not a team to be underestimated

PEAK officially announced earlier this week a three-year endorsement signing with Patrick Patterson. The Houston Rockets rookie and No. 14 overall pick in the 2010 NBA draft joins fellow PEAK athletes and Houston Rockets teammates Shane Battier and Kyle Lowry.

Patterson is the 12th NBA player signed to the Chinese-based brand which operates over 6,000 retail stores in Asia.

“We are very excited mainly because this is the first player signed by PEAK SPORTS USA and not by PEAK China,” said Allison Douglas, PEAK Public Relations Coordinator.

“We are also excited because Patterson is young and has great potential in his career. He is exactly what we are looking for: a player that can grow with the company.”

“I am very excited to join the Peak family.” said Patterson. “My relationship with Peak provides the opportunity to partner with a leading China brand as I establish my own global brand. I look forward to growing with Peak as my professional career begins.”

The star of the FIBA World Championships is not on Team USA. Its Argentina(and Houston Rockets) forward Luis Scola. On Tuesday Argentina played Brazil in arguably the best game so far in the FIBA Worlds, and Scola was unstoppable.

Luis Scola scored 37 points, carrying Argentina to a 93-89 victory over Brazil on Tuesday and into the quarterfinals of the world championships.  Scola, the tournament’s leading scorer, had 10 of Argentina’s final 12 points.
Scola has scored 30 in Argentina’s last 5 games!
Argentina will next play Lithuania on Thursday.

What is RR?

Each year the Hosuton Rockets create a new campaign to motivate fans to get behind the team. Last year was all about Red Nation, which had to please China!

The Rockets marketing campaign this year revloves around the queston, “What is RR?” I have no idea what ‘RR’ is but the Rockets website sort of explains it, “RR is the representation of a team ready to strike and ready to deliver on its immense promise and potential.” This is the mantra for which it stands: a team with a singular goal and vision, ready to grow together and bring a championship back to the city of Houston.

There are videos of Aaron Brooks, Shane Battier, Jordan Hill, and Kyle Lowry so far. As we get closer to the season I’m sure each player will get one. Heres hoping they make a Brad Miller video!

姚明 Yao Ming cleared to play

The 7-foot-6 Yao sweated through a gray T-shirt during a vigorous workout for reporters at the Toyota Center. He mostly worked on post moves with teammate Chuck Hayes and 7-footer James Cripe, a player in the NBA’s developmental league. The amount of times Cripe and Hayes fooled Yao with the ball fake was tad troubling.

“I am very excited,” Yao said Tuesday. “I am just looking forward to playing a great season. I think I can count on my foot now.”

Tuesday’s activity served as the latest indication that the 7-time All-Star is well on the road to recovery from the fractured left foot which cost him the entire 2009-10 season. The workout came a day after Rockets Consulting Physician Dr. Tom Clanton revealed that the hairline fracture in Yao’s surgically repaired foot has fully healed.

“That’s just the confidence,” Yao said. “I think everybody would have that after a foot injury, and (I’m) just still a little bit weak on that. I just need to continue to build on that. Compared to two months ago, it’s really a lot better.”

4-Way Trade: Rockets, Hornets, Pacers, Nets

Trevor Ariza was sent to the New Orleans Hornets and Darren Collison to the Indiana Pacers in a four-team, five-player trade Wednesday. In the trade, the Houston Rockets sent Ariza to the Hornets, who in turn sent Collison and James Posey to the Pacers. The Pacers sent Troy Murphy to the New Jersey Nets. And the Nets sent Courtney Lee to the Rockets.

Breakdown:

Darren Collison leaving the Hornets shows Chris Paul the organization is serious about keeping him. The addition of Ariza betters their core, but will this make CP3 happy? Hornets  also have completed trade of forward Julian Wright to Raptors for guard Marco Bellineli.

I like the Rockets this year. If Yao is healthy of course, then I love the Rockets. By trading Ariza for Courtney Lee, it breaks up the front court log jam and gives them a solid young guard. Essentially they just re-shuffled their overall team depth, which is strong, and cut $5 mill off the payroll. What could Morey be up too? This deal saves the Rockets $28 million on the life of the contract and roughly $10 million (when you factor in luxury tax payments) this season. Rockets also got $6 million trade exception. This team knows how to run a business. SALARY DUMP!

The Pacers wake up from the dead with this move. They have that much needed point guard in Collison, and are set up nicely for the summer of 11′ and 12′. The Pacers did take on the last two years and $13 million of Posey’s contract, but the deal also sliced another $4 million off the team’s overall payroll.

The Nets getting Troy Murphy gives them a ton of height. Not sure how all the Nets pieces will fit together, but Avery Johnson will figure it out. Murphy is also on the last year of his contract, which could make him an important trading chip for the Nets at the 2011 trade deadline.
