The Celtics led for just 60 seconds in the second half until Ray Allen sank a go-ahead 3-pointer with 12 seconds left and beat the Knicks 87-85 in their playoff opener on Sunday night.

Over the last 5 postseasons Ray Allen has hit more go-ahead three pointers(54%) then anyone in the NBA.

Ray Allen led the Celtics with 24 points, Paul Pierce added 18 and Kevin Garnett had 15 points and 13 boards. Rajon Rondo was a dime, and a board from a triple-double(10,9,9). But the Big 4 got help from 6-6 shooting from Jermaine O’Neal, who also added 4 blocks.

Carmelo Anthony struggled throughout the game, picking up 2 fouls in the first 88 seconds, and a crucial offensive foul with 21 seconds remaining. He finished with 15 points on 5-18 shooting, many of which were heavily contested shots.

“Ray’s the hero with the shot,” Rivers said. “Paul’s the hero with the pass. That’s a great example of not playing hero basketball, just trusting what we drew up. And he made the shot.”

Amare’ Stoudemire had 28 points, 11 boards, and carried the Knicks down the stretch until Kevin Garnett tightened up the defense. Bad news for the Knicks, Chauncey Billups left with 51 seconds remaining with what he said was a strain in his left knee or thigh muscle. He and D’Antoni said they didn’t know his status for Game 2.

The Knicks, in the playoffs for the first time in seven seasons, last won a postseason game on Apr. 29, 2001.

NBA EASTERN CONFERENCE PLAYOFFS: 1ST ROUND PREVIEW

At long last the second season of the NBA is just a few days from starting. For the first time in years the Eastern Conference has compelling matchups from top to bottom. Deeper into the Playoffs the East will showcase some of the best basketball seen in years, if of course, the referees are less noticeable then last year.  Lets start with the top and the bottom teams:

#1 Chicago Bulls vs. #8 Indiana Pacers

The Bulls shocked many in the NBA, finishing with the best record in the East. Just as shocking was the Indiana Pacers making the Playoffs. Chicago won three of the four games against Indiana this season, and shouldn’t have to much trouble eliminating the Pacers from the Playoffs.

We didn’t even expect the Pacers to make the Playoffs, so winning two games in this series isn’t that big of a stretch. Look for Chicago to display the defense that got them the #1 record, coupled with soon-to-be-MVP Derrick Rose doing everything. Chicago will go as far as Derrick Rose can carry them. We wait to see how long Rose can do everything every game.

#2 Miami Heat vs. #7 Philadelphia 76ers

The Miami Heat had numerous ups and downs throughout the season, but one constant remained strong; Lebron James. If the race for MVP was about the best player in the league then LeBron James would be weeks from his third straight MVP award. However James plays with another player who will receive MVP votes, Dwyane Wade, and their chemistry will ultimately tell the tale of the Heats success.

Aside from James, Wade and Chris Bosh, the Heat are mostly role players(Mario Chalmers, James Jones, Ilgauskas, Old-Ass Juan Howard). Role players that will desperately be needed to play at peak levels in order for the Heat to begin to fulfill their quest for six titles. Against the 76ers those role players sadly won’t be that necessary. The Heat won all 3 games against the Heat by a 10 point average.

Philadelphia hasn’t been to the Playoffs in ages, and sadly they won’t be around long in these playoffs. The 76ers athleticism will make for exciting basketball but it wont translate into victories.

#3 Boston Celtics vs. #7 New York Knicks

The Boston Celtics limp into the Playoffs for the second year in a row. Last year they went 3-7 down the stretch, but displayed visually the concept of ‘turning it on’, making it to the Finals and losing to the Lakers in seven games. Are the Celtics capable of pulling this off again this year? Of course they are capable and the New York Knicks make for the perfect first round matchup. The age-old battle of offense vs. defense.

New York knew they would be in the Playoffs when they signed Amare’ Stoudemire in the off-season. The addition of Carmelo Anthony adds even more fuel to the Knicks bandwagon. The Knicks will be a formidable foe, but they lost all three times to the Celtics in games decided in the last three minutes. Closing out games was the Knicks achilles during the season. Will it carry over into the Playoffs? Knicks and Celtics play their lasts game of the season against each other on April 13th.

#4 Orlando Magic vs. #5 Atlanta Hawks

Easily the lowest rated series of this years Playoffs, pits the Magic against the Hawks who they sweep out the Playoffs last year. We wouldn’t be surprised if the same thing happens this year. Atlanta may arrive in these Playoffs with more passion then they have shown since the All-Star break, but the outcome of the series still favors Dwight Howard, and the Magic.

SCHEDULE UPDATE:

No. 1 Chicago vs. No. 8 Indiana — Saturday at 1 p.m. ET on ESPN

No. 2 Miami vs. No. 7 Philadelphia — Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET on ABC

No. 3 Boston vs. No. 6 New York — Sunday at 7 p.m. ET on TNT

No. 4 Orlando vs. No. 5 Atlanta — Saturday at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN

ALMOST QUADRUPLE-DOUBLE FOR MJ

Mike displaying his “video game cheat” abilities against Dennis Johnson and the Boston Celtics.  Jordan in his i still haven’t shaved my head bald phase nearly comes up with a quadruple double 42 points, 9 boards, 11 dimes, and 8 steals. Enjoy the color commentary of the masterful Hubie Brown. Bulls Head Coach Doug Collins appears pretty pleased with the outcome at the end, while Phil Jackson and Tex Winter walking off the court together was priceless.

Mike had 16 triple-doubles in the 1988-89 season averaging 32.5 points 8.0 dimes. 8.0 boards while shooting 54 % from the field.

Ray Allen is 2 treys away!

Posted 07 Feb 2011 — by Phillip Pyle
Category Boston Celtics, NBA

Reggie Miller was a nightmare to Knicks fans, and every once in a while he got pass the Chicago Bulls and Michael Jordan. Reggie’s ultimate accomplishment in his 18 seasons was making more three-pointers then anyone else in NBA history. He reached the Finals once, but he and the Indiana Pacers were no match for young Kobe and Shaq in his prime. This summer Reggie Miller should be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame, but sadly he will no longer hold the 3-point record upon induction.

The Boston Celtics long-range specialist Ray Allen is 2 treys from passing Reggie Miller. Allen’s currently averaging 2.3 made 3-pointers per game this season, and if that pace continues, he will likely eclipse Miller’s 2,560 career 3-pointers next Thursday against the visiting Los Angeles Lakers. Ironically enough, that game will be nationally televised by TNT, the station Miller serves as a color analyst for, which means there is a chance that he could be broadcasting the game in which his record is surpassed.

Allen’s pursuit of Miller’s record has been a widely discussed topic all season, but the attention being paid to it has increased tenfold over the last few weeks as Allen has inched closer and closer. Even the JumboTron at the TD Garden displays a graphic after each 3-pointer Allen makes, letting the home crowd know how close he is to the record.

“I hear it in the building more than I have in games past,” Allen admitted. “I think everybody knows, but there’s a sense of me getting sidetracked if you worry about it, because you feel like you’ve got to shoot it from beyond the arc. I don’t want to press, I don’t want to step outside of what we’re trying to do here, and just continue to be who I am and do what I’ve been doing this whole time. I know it. I know it’s in the back of my mind. I know it’s there, but this is me being here, being where I am. I’m here because of the preparation I’ve put in my whole career, so I just stick to that and let it carry me the rest of the way. I truly am enjoying it,” Allen said. “This is a moment that I’ve never experienced before. I don’t know how many people can experience this type of moment. We’re playing a team sport, but there’s the individual element that is associated with me right now [and] as much as I’ve always been very into the team, it’s something that everybody is pointing at me, like, ‘You need to keep doing this, you need to do that.’ It’s all a testimony to the guys that can stay around for a long time, because, you get 20,000 points, however many minutes — whatever it may be — but longevity produces greatness in any sport.”

Rondo Returns, Pierce Dunks, Celtics Win

Posted 02 Jan 2011 — by Phillip Pyle
Category Boston Celtics, NBA, Toronto Raptors

When Glen Davis gets 15 points, 11 boards and eight dimes, the Celtics usually win, and sometimes you can see pigs flying. Paul Pierce added 30 points, Ray Allen had 23 and the Celtics got their first win of 2011 beating the Raptors 93-79.

Paul Pierce dunked the ball. Of course he has dunked the ball before, but this dunk may have been the best of his career. After the dunk Shaq blocked DeMar DeRozan, leading to an Allen made 3-pointer and followed with a jumper in the lane as Boston pushed its lead to 87-75.

Boston point guard Rajon Rondo returned to the starting lineup after missing seven games because of a sprained left ankle. He had four points and eight assists in 34 minutes.

NBA 2011 RESOLUTIONS

With the start of a new year, teams make their own resolutions.  Here is a team by team look at those resolutions.

ATLANTA HAWKS

We resolve to get to the bottom of why we gave Joe Johnson so much damn money. He does lead us in points, but will we make it deep in the playoffs….of course not.

BOSTON CELTICS

We the Boston Celtics resolve to play at least one game with both O’Neal’s on the court at the same time. I, the Boston Celtics  fan resolve to relax and enjoy each game because if anyone gets injured the world will not end.

CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

I, Michael Jordan resolve to stop wearing all my rings on one necklace to every Bobcats meeting.

CHICAGO BULLS

We resolve to kept nurturing Derrick Rose, and to keep Carlos Boozer and his weird beard away from him.

CLEVELAND CAVALIERS

We resolve to simply exist before the NBA goes through with contraction and makes us a NBDL team. I, the Cavs fan will save up and buy the Fathead of Daniel Gibson for no reason whatsoever.

DALLAS MAVERICKS

I, Rick Carlisle resolve to stop making faces like Jim Carrey, and to let jason Terry do whatever he wants in the 4th quarter.

DETROIT PISTONS

I, Tayshaun Prince resolve to ask Joe Dumars nicely if I can be traded, then pray its not to Toronto.

DENVER NUGGETS

We resolve to trade Carmelo to the highest bidder, then struggle until we draft anthoer Carmelo and repeat the same process.

GOLDEN ST. WARRIORS

We resolve to never sign a legitimate big man so we can never truly play defense.

HOUSTON ROCKETS

I, the Houston Rockets fan resolve to lower our expectations until Michael Jordan goes and plays baseball for two years.

INDIANA PACERS

We resolve to sleep through the rest of this year, and promptly wake up during the lottery selection this summer.

L.A. CLIPPERS

I, Donald Sterling resolve to continue being concerned about only money, and as long as Blake Griffin makes me money he stays….for cheap of course.

L.A. LAKERS

We resolve to work all year so we actually play a competitive game on Christmas. We also resolve to never let Kobe and Nike convince us that Lime green sneakers are cool.

MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES

We resolve to save our money, to pay for the shipping of all the equipment to our new home in Seattle.

MIAMI HEAT

I, Miami Heat fan resolve to show up to games on time, especially once the playoffs start. At least we will make it seem that basketball games are more fun then the beach, or clubs full of young hispanic women.

MILWAUKEE BUCKS

We resolve to continue doing whatever it was we did to beat the Lakers. *Brandon Jennings didn’t play

MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES

I, Kevin Love resolve to rebound every ball, on every shot, from every basketball game in the world.

NEW JERSEY NETS

We resolve to never put an ad across from Madison Square Garden again. Unless of course, if we get Carmelo Anthony then we get to play in the Garden.

NEW ORLEANS HORNETS

We the NBA speak for the Hornets, and the Hornets have nothing to say.

NEW YORK KNICKS

I, Spike Lee resolve to continue wearing clothes too big for me to games, and my Landry Fields jersey, even if he gets traded.

OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER

We resolve to take out as many loans as possible to keep Russell Westbrook away from Los Angeles.

ORLANDO MAGIC

I, Dwight Howard will work on my three point shooting so I can fit in better with the team.

PHILADELPHIA 76ERS

We resolve to hire Michael Vick as soon as the NFL season is over. He will suit up and be in the starting lineup, just for the player introductions, but he wont play any minutes.

PHOENIX SUNS

I, Marcin Gortat, will continue to plead with my teammates to play defense, even if they speak another language.

PORTLAND TRAILBLAZERS

I, Trail Blazers fan will take a class in physical therapy so I can be more hands on with the players.

SACRAMENTO KINGS

We, the Maloof Brothers resolve to finish construction on our secret basketball stadium in Las Vegas. We also must sit Tyreke Evans down and ask that he not hit 50 footers to win games and instead keep piling on the loses.

SAN ANTONIO SPURS

We resolve to casually ignore the age of our Big 3, but encourage fans to purchase DeJuan Blair Bears from the gift shop

TORONTO RAPTORS

We resolve to call the NBA everyday, and send flowers so that they remember there is a team in Toronto.

UTAH JAZZ

We resolve to continue research into age-defying potions that can make it possible for Jerry Sloan to coach the Jazz forever.

WASHINGTON WIZARDS

We resolve to finally change our name back to the Bullets, and once again lose out on front page reports to real bullets.

Celtics Streak to 13

Paul Pierce finished with 18 points, 10 boards and 12 as the Celtics increased their winning streak to 13 games, defeating the Pacers 99-88.

It was the sixth regular-season triple-double of Pierce’s career and seventh overall. He last accomplished the feat March 8, 2006, against Philadelphia, which visits Boston on Wednesday.

Shaq returned on Sunday after missing four straight games with a sore right calf.

He had 11 points, including a monster dunk off a long lob from Pierce, after he applied some chap-stick:

Celtics and Knicks Revive Rivalry, Sort Of

The New York Knicks welcomed the Boston Celtics on Wednesday to Madison Square Garden in what was built up as a “renewed rivalry”.

Renewed by the recent winning streak by the Knicks and the play of Amare Stoudemire and his 8 game 30 point streak.

Many of the Knicks victories were against weaker opponents. The two biggest wins were against the Hornets and the Nuggets three days ago. The Knicks 16-10 record is good enough for 4th in the Eastern Conference and beating Boston would would make it easier for New Yorkers and others to jump back on the Knicks bandwagon.

The Knicks were seeking their first nine-game winning streak since winning 15 in a row from March 1-April 2, 1994. But the Celtics, showing their huge advantage in late-game experience, scored 67 points in the second half.

Then this happened:

Paul Pierce has a funny way of celebrating game winners, and more about Nate’s face plant later.
