Jordan Rides the Bus
Category NBA
From the director of “Bull Durham”, and the writer of “White Men Can’t Jump”, Ron Shelton presents “Jordan Rides the Bus.”
Premieres Tuesday Aug 24 8PM ESPN
In the fall of 1993, in his prime and at the summit of the sports world, Michael Jordan walked away from pro basketball. After leading the Dream Team to an Olympic gold medal in 1992 and taking the Bulls to their third consecutive NBA championship the following year, Jordan was jolted by the murder of his father.
Was it the brutal loss of such an anchor in his life that caused the world’s most famous athlete to rekindle a childhood ambition by playing baseball? Or some feeling that he had nothing left to prove or conquer in basketball? Or something deeper and perhaps not yet understood?
Ron Shelton, a former minor leaguer who brought his experiences to life in the classic movie “Bull Durham,” will revisit Jordan’s short career in the minor leagues and explore the motivations that drove the world’s most competitive athlete to play a new sport in the relative obscurity of Birmingham, Alabama, for a young manager named Terry Francona.
US holds off Spain in 2nd exhibition game
Category Team USA
Team USA holds off Spain 86-85. The United States came out much better in their second “friendly” before the World Championships start next week.
Kevin Durant was awarded the Global Community Cup player of the game. He finished with 25 points, and 10 boards. Durant blocked shots by Ricky Rubio and Rudy Fernandez after Derrick Rose put the Americans ahead with two free throws.
The United States rallied after Spain — 13 points behind after three quarters — took a one-point lead on Juan Carlos Navarro’s three-point play with 27 seconds left.
Navarro scored 20 points in the first game between the teams since the Americans won the 2008 Olympic final. It was the first loss in nine games for Spain, the defending world champion. The World Championship begins Saturday in Turkey.

US beats Lithuania in 2nd friendly!
Category Team USA
Russell Westbrook was named Player of the Game after finishing with 12 points and five rebounds. Rudy Gay had 14 points and five rebounds as the United States overcame a poor shooting start and early nerves to beat Lithuania 77-61 in a basketball world championship warmup match on Saturday.
Three-of-21 shooting and six turnovers left the U.S. trailing 15-7 after the first period.
But it regained its composure and hung in with its equally poor-shooting opponent until a Lithuania technical followed by a flagrant foul by Mantas Kalnietis allowed the Americans to lead for good at 54-49 near the end of the third period. It was part of a 17-0 run, with Russell Westbrook and Eric Gordon leading the attack.
Kevin Durant led the U.S. with 15 points while Linas Kleiza’s 12 points led Lithuania, which hit 25-of-62 shots to the U.S.’ 27-of-58 shooting.
American team’s nerves showed early under Lithuania pressure, and it took Rudy Gay’s entry to spark the U.S. But it was Westbrook’s and Gordon’s leading the USA on a 24-2 run in the third quarter that gave the U.S. a winning cushion.
Gordon knocked down all four three throws after the flagrant call and followed up a Westbrook dunk from a steal with his own lay-in as the U.S. went into the fourth period full of momentum and ready to run the fast-break. Lithuania didn’t hit a shot for five minutes in that time.

Joseph Young loses appeal, will sit out season
Category NCAA
Basketball star Joseph Young of Houston (Texas) Yates will willingly sit out a season – and lose a year of college eligibility – after learning his final appeals to be released from his National Letter of Intent to attend Providence College have been denied.
Young, who helped lead Yates to the state championship, was hoping to get out of the letter of intent he signed to play at Providence College because of a desire to stay closer to home and to the ailing aunt who helped raise him.
Providence refused an initial request. Young’s family then went to the governing body of the National Letter of Intent program, which denied their appeal on Tuesday.
Young’s father – former professional player Michael Young – is upset. ”I’m really disappointed and so is Joseph,” Michael Young told Fox 26 sports in Houston. “The NLI (National Letter of Intent) system is crap.
“I think the whole process is unfair.”
I think Texas Southern University is calling!

LeBron James opens up to GQ!
Category Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, NBA
Limited in his comments in the wake of his dramatic free-agency shift from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Miami Heat, LeBron James opened up in an interview with J.R. Moehringer for the September edition of GQ.
At a time when James was being obsessively shielded from the world by his team of handlers, J.R. Moehringer had unprecedented inside access: a pair of face-to-face meetings shortly before The Decision and a follow-up phone call six days after the fact. During that postmortem interview, when Moehringer asked James what he’d change if he had a do-over, James replied, “Nothing at all.”
LeBron took a dislike to those who questioned a focus other than toward the sport.
“People questioning how much I love the game,” he said, “that’s never been something I haven’t cherished. Every night on the court I give my all, and if I’m not giving 100 percent, I criticize myself.”
Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert, who ripped James for his choice to go to Miami, was also a topic of conversation in the GQ story.
“I don’t think he ever cared about LeBron,” James said. “My mother always told me: ‘You will see the light of people when they hit adversity. You’ll get a good sense of their character.’ Me and my family have seen the character of that man.”
GQ interviewed J.R. Moehringer on the post-Decision aftermath, predicts how the first season in Miami will go down, and crowns the single most insane moment from his time with James,
