NBA Playoffs: (Day 14 Recap)

(AP Photo/Jeffrey Phelps)

Atlanta Hawks with a must win on the road played with more then they have all Playoffs. After a closely contested first half, the Hawks outscored the Bucks 29-11 in the third quarter and held on to win 83-69. Atlanta got 22 points from Joe Johnson and Sixth Man of the Year Jamal Crawford finished with 24 points.“The bottom line today is we brought our hard hats and not our fishing caps,” Smith said. “We established ourselves early. They gave us a fight, but we were just hungry tonight. I haven’t seen us play like this the whole series.” Atlanta heads back to the Philips Center where the city will turn down Wacka Flocka Flame on the radio and tune into the Hawks game.

Milwaukee had a chance to finish off the Hawks at home and advance to the Eastern Conf. Semifinals, instead they left their offense in the locker room. Bucks shot 25 of 76 from the field for 32.9%, and 7 of 26 from deep. John Slamons and Brandon Jennings combined for 20 points on 6 of 28 shooting. Carlos Delfino had 20 and was the only player with more then 13 points. Bucks. Milwaukee may have to put the blame solely on Jerry Stackhouse for this:

Stackhouse said it was his fourth time singing the national anthem. “I’m a little disappointed that my mojo didn’t work,” he said. “I’m 3-1 now.”  Series tied 3-3.

Once again the Lakers came out fired up, jumping out to a 13-4 lead, before the Thunder woke up to gain the lead 27-26 by the end of the first. After a back and fourth game, it came down to the final possession. Kobe missed a fade-away jumper and Pau Gasol was there to tip the ball in with .05 on the clock given the Lakers a1-point lead. Kobe lead all scorers with 32 points, and the only other Lakers in double figures were Derek Fisher, and Shannon Brown both with 11.

Ron Artest’s defense on Kevin Durant was the x-factor in this game and the series. Durant shot 5 of 23, for 26 points, which came mostly from the charity stripe where he went 14-15. Jeff Green had 16 in his best game of the series, and Russell Westbrook was solid with 21 points and 9 assists. Thunder were unable to execute with less then a minute left and the lead, allowing the Lakers multiple chances to win the game. Phil Jackson came up with an unexpected answer to a question about why visiting teams are generally more vulnerable. “You have to remember these men are out there in their underwear, in their shorts. These aren’t like the old days but they are pretty scantily clad, and they are, you know, in front of their fans. If you’re at all self-conscious, there you are.”

After a 50-win season and their first appearance in the playoffs, Oklahoma City gave the city and their fans an exciting and competitive series against the Lakers.

In the most disappointing series of this years playoffs, the Nuggets got completely embarrassed by the Utah Jazz. the above pic describes the awkwardness of this entire series. Denver was without its head coach George Karl as everyone in the world knows, and it had to affect the team in a major way. They seemed easily shook, and out of sorts on defense. Chauncey Billups led Denver with 30 points and Anthony finished with 20 points on 6 for 22 shooting.

After Carmelo’s explosion in Game 1 the Jazz won three straight and ended the series in Game 6 in front of their fans 112-104. 91 combined free throws were attempted…damn! Matthews went 13 for 15 from the free throw line.

Deron Williams had 14 points, and 10 dimes. Boozer had 22 points and 20 boards. Utah now heads to Los Angeles for a rematch of last years Round 1 matchup where the Jazz where dismissed in 5 games. Lakers were without Bynum, and the addition of Artest should be too much for the Jazz.

NBA Playoffs (Day 13 Recap)

The Spurs aren’t the normal 7th seed. The Spurs Big 3(Manu,Parker,and Duncan) knew that treating Game 6 like a Game 7 would help to motivate the team to finish off the Dallas Mavericks. Thats exactly what they did. Manu, Parker, and Duncan combined for 53 points and the Spurs came out early with an intensity that was lacking in Game 5. After leading by as much as 22 points the Spurs let the Mavs back in the game, but circled the wagons and pulled out the win 97-87. San Antonio is only the fifth No. 7 seed to win a first-round series, and the first since the opening round became a best-of-7 in 2003.George Hill had 21 points, and now the Spurs face long time playoff rival Phoenix Suns.

Before the trade-deadline the Mavericks made a big trade getting Brendan Haywood, and Caron Butler costing owner Mark Cuban an extra $30 million. Two players that were brought in to add toughness, and the pieces they needed to defeat the Lakers. Unfortunately the Mavs might have been looking to far in the future and not concentrating on the team in front of them. Dirk was Dirk, 13 of 21 for 33 points. Butler had 25 points and rookie Rodrigue Beaubois was the only other player in double figures with 16 points. Mark Cuban once again has a long summer ahead of him. Mavs have had 10 seasons of at least 50 wins and only one trip to the Finals to show for it. In many ways the Mavs havent been the same since the Heat came back to beat them in the Finals 4 years ago.

If I told you that the Phoenix Suns got 10 points, 6 assists and 7 turnovers from Steve Nash, and won the game you wouldn’t believe me. Well in Game 6 on Thursday night thats just what happened. The Suns got 28 points from jason Richardson and 22 from Amare Stoudemire in a series clinching win 99-90. Phoenix is 32-4 this season when Richardson scores at least 20 points. Both Phoenix and Portland attempted 23 threes, while the Suns(12) made just one more then the Blazers(11). Now two old playoff rivals face each other once against the Spurs and Suns face off in the Western Conference Semi-Finals.

Portland has never won a series that they have trailed 3-2. Portland scared the Sns in Game 1, but was unable to recapture the magic that help them win that game. Brandon Roy had 14 points for the Blazers in his first start of the series. Martell Webster had 19 points for Portland, which failed to advance out of the first round for the second straight year. C Greg Oden was at Portland’s shootaround earlier Thursday. The 7-foot former No. 1 draft pick broke his left kneecap and required season-ending surgery early in December. Oden addressed reporters during Thursday’s shootaround, saying he was not yet doing any court-related workouts

Who didn’t see this one coming? Tyreke Evans of the Sacramento Kings is the recipient of the Eddie Gottlieb Trophy as the 2009-10 T-Mobile NBA Rookie of the Year, the NBA announced Thursday.

Evans received 67 first-place votes (491 points) from a panel of 123 sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada. Golden State’s Stephen Curry finished second with 391 points and Milwaukee’s Brandon Jennings finished third with 204 points. Players were awarded five points for each first-place vote, three points for each second-place vote and one point for each third-place vote. Selected with the fourth overall pick in the NBA Draft 2009, Evans averaged a rookie-and team-leading 20.1 points, as well as a team-high 5.8 assists (second among rookies) and 5.3 rebounds a game. Evans joined Oscar Robertson, Michael Jordan, and LeBron James as the only players in NBA history to average at least 20 points, five rebounds, and five assists in their rookie seasons. Among rookies, Evans also was first in minutes (37.2 mpg) and second in steals (1.51 spg), while leading in free throws made (348) and attempted (465).

The Eddie Gottlieb Trophy is named in honor of Eddie Gottlieb, one of the NBA’s founders who coached the Philadelphia Warriors to the NBA championship in 1946-47.

Spechater’s NBA Playoff Points for April 29, 2010

Here are my thoughts for today. Check em’ out!

  • Last night’s Game 5 home loss to the Bogut-less Bucks is a perfect example why the Hawks are not yet considered an elite NBA team. They got out-hussled in the last three minutes of the game and deserved to lose. Love the heart showed by the Bucks.
  • Dwight Howard, be smarter. Don’t you realize anything you post on your blog is going to be read by many people, including the Commish? Any statement that begins with “I’m not looking to say anything to get myself in trouble with the league” should not be written. D Howard is $35,000 lighter today (which is probably nothing to him).
  • Clevelanders have got to be concerned about Lebron’s right elbow.
  • Miami management better be working their contacts to bring a star free-agent to Miami (e.g. Chris Bosh) or your boy D Wade is history. Flash deserves better than who he’s been playing with the past two seasons. Oh yeah, 2010-2011 is a make or break year for Michael Beasley and Jermaine O’Neal is finished.
  • Although Denver pulled out a win at home last night, the series is over. Utah will win Game 6. Hell, the Nuggets couldn’t win in Utah with Nene’, so they definitely are going fishing with Nene’ most likely out for Game 6.
  • I’m going with the Suns over the Blazers tonight.

That’s all I got for today. Holla!

NBA Playoffs: (Day 12 Recap)

The comparisons between the Hawks-Bucks, and the Nuggets-Jazz are eerily similar. Both the Hawks and Nuggets are the higher seed with a habit of losing on the road. The Bucks and Jazz are missing key players, yet lead the series. Bucks and Jazz are both small market teams and have coaches who preach defense above all else. Nuggets and Hawks have coaches that wont be coaching for them next year.(maybe)

(Photo by Scott Cunningham/NBAE via Getty Images)

In Game 5 of the Hawks-Bucks series, the Bucks did something they hadn’t done since April 21st of 2004, win a road playoff game. Brandon Jennings had 25 points, John Salmons added 19 and the Bucks down by as much as 13 fought back to win 91-87. The Bucks did what the Thunder were trying to do yesterday, win Game 5 on the road after winning both home games. Bucks can clinch Friday at the Bradley Center.

Atlanta appears to be in free-fall mode. They played a good game but Joe Johnson fouling out with over 2 minutes to go, left the Hawks out of sorts down the stretch. Joe Johnson shot 6 of 16 for 13 points and Sixth Man of the Year Jamal Crawford was 4 of 18 from the field for 11 points. “This is incredible,” said Jamal Crawford,  “We had the game won. It just slipped away from us.” Hawks coach Mike Woodsen’s future with the Hawks is fading like people in the pictures in Back to the Future. His contract is up at the end of the year, and if Atlanta doesn’t make it pass the Bucks, Mike Woodsen will be unemployed. Bucks 3-2

The Nuggets had to win,  and they did just that, playing the best they have all series. Six players scored in double figures for the Nuggets, led by Carmelo Anthony’s 26. Anthony added 11 rebounds for his 10th career playoff double-double, and second in a row. The Nuggets shot 50.7 percent from the field and improved to 9-0 over the last two postseason when shooting at least 50 percent from the field. Surprisingly this was the first win for Carmelo win the Nuggets face elimination. Nuggets now head to Utah where winning will be as difficult as solving a Rubiks cube while skydiving.

The Jazz have never lost a series when up 3-1. Heading back to the Delta Center for Game 6 Friday, the Jazz will look to end this series. There was never a doubt that they weren’t trying to win tonight though. Deron Williams had 34 points and 10 assists to lead the Jazz. The 34 points is one off his playoff career high. Williams joined Kevin Johnson as the only players with 5 20-10 games in a single playoff series. Carlos Boozer added 25 points and 16 boards. Jazz 3-2

NBA Top Selling Jerseys!

Kobe Bryant again is atop the list of the NBA’s most popular jerseys. Portland’s Brandon Roy is the top Trail Blazer, at No. 13. Bryant remained No. 1 on the list released Wednesday by the league. The Lakers star has topped the ranking since the start of the 2008-09 season and also leads sales in Europe and China. He will likely be challenged next season if Cleveland’s LeBron James goes ahead with plans to switch from No. 23 to No. 6, or changes teams. James remained second on the new list.  The list is based on sales at the NBA Store and nbastore.com since the start of the season. Sales were up a combined 20 percent over last season. Kevin Garnett was third, Derrick Rose moved up to fourth and Dwight Howard was No. 5. The Lakers remained tops in team merchandise sales.

NBA Playoffs: (Day 11 Recap)

Bye Wade! (Photo by Elsa/Getty Images)

The Boston Celtics advanced to the Eastern Conference semifinals thanks to 16 points, 12 rebounds and eight dimes from Rajon Rondo. The Celtics will play Cleveland who bested the Chicago Bulls in their first round matchup. Celtics played their best all around game shooting 49% from the field, 58% from deep and 19-22 from the free throw line. As difficult as it was for the Heat to “contain” Dwayne Wade, the inevitable back-to-back MVP LeBron James awaits. Celtics and Cavaliers split the season series.

The second team to make summer plans is the Miami Heat, and by “summer plans” I mean resigning Dwayne Wade, and getting him some help. Wade needs help, he had 31 points 10 dimes and 8 rebounds. Mario Chalmers had 20, and that was it. If the Heat were to get rid of the entire team aside from Chalmers and Wade that would be understandable. With the summer starting for Wade I look for him to add to his wardrobe, cameo on Inside the NBA, and make some new T-Mobile commercials while contemplating playing for the Bulls.

Rose had 31 points, 3 boards, 6 dimes, but was unable to score down the stretch. Chicago has an interesting summer ahead of them, finding Rose help, and getting a new coach. “We both(Del Negro) came in as rookies. It would be devastating,” Rose said. “But it’s not up to me, it’s up to the front office. They’re the ones that drafted me, so I guess I’m behind them.” Rose said it would be hard to imagine the Bulls firing their coach after making the playoffs. “It would be unusual, especially since it’s our second time (in the playoffs),” Rose said. “But the league changes constantly. I guess that’s how it is in the NBA. It’s tough to coach up here.”

LeBron James scored 19 points — 16 in the second half — and added 10 rebounds and nine dimes. He unfortunately was unable to disguise the pain in his right elbow. James, who wore a sleeve on his right arm for the second straight game, refused to address his injury before the game. “I don’t know what is up with it, but I’m ready to play,” he said.

Mo Williams shot 2-13 from the field, the Celtics are going to love not having to play defense on him.

NBA Playoff: (Day 10 Recap)…it keeps going and going….

For the fourth game in a row Dwight Howard got in foul trouble, played less then 30 minutes, and the Orlando Magic won. The Magic  dominated all four of these games making Charlotte look completely different from the team we saw all season. The pressure of making it to their first playoffs, or Michael Jordan sitting next to you could have been to blame for Charlotes poor offense output. In only 106 minutes Dwight Howard had a playoff leading 20 blocks. The Magic now await the winner of the Hawks-Bucks series which is now tied 2-2.

As disappointing as these Playoffs have been for the Bobcats the future is bright. Michael Jordan is the owner, they have a nice amount of cap space to get a needed point guard and Larry Brown said that he’ll only coach for Bobcats owner Michael Jordan. “I’m not coaching anywhere but Charlotte,” Brown said. “Now am I going to go home and talk to my wife and kids? I’ll be 70 years old with two young kids. Am I going to talk to them and find out what I need to do and am I going to talk to Michael? Yeah, absolutely.”
