President Barack Obama has welcomed the NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers to the White House.

An avid basketball fan, Obama says no team exemplified excellence on the court more than the Lakers did last year in winning their 15th league championship.

Obama said Monday he was especially excited to meet Lakers coach Phil Jackson, who has won 10 championships, though he didn’t hesitate to remind the team that six of those victories were with Obama’s hometown Chicago Bulls.

“You remember that,” Obama joked with former Lakers all-star Magic Johnson, who was on the losing end of the Bulls 1991 victory.

Obama commended the players not only for their athletic achievements, but also their work off the court. The players held a fitness clinic for Washington-area school children

Monday, and several players are donating money to relief efforts in Haiti. The Lakers added to Obama’s collection of sports jerseys, presenting him with a bright yellow jersey with the president’s name stitched on the back.

The Lakers have been to the White House numerous times.

LBJ and Cavs beat Lakers Again!

The Lakers are the best team in the NBA, but on Thursday night on the road against the Cavaliers

they showed signs of what could be there downfall. The “toughness” of the Lakers is always put in question when they face a Eastern Conference team and are physically outmatched. Pau Gasol is the player the finger points to first, and on thursday he was out rebounded by J.J. Hickson by 6 rebounds. The Lakers bench who shined against Orlando on Monday scoring 42 points was held to only 22 points. An interesting note is the Lakers scored 87 points in both losses to the Cavs this year. LeBron James finished with 37 points and nine rebounds. James has won seven of his last nine head-to-head meetings against Kobe Bryant. Bryant finished with 31 points but was only 4-of-15 in the second half as the Lakers lost the opener of an eight-game road trip. The Lakers will play 7 games in the next 9 days against teams(Knicks, Boston, Memphis) that will be playing the best ball they have played all year due to the defending champs as the opponent.

Score Like Agent Zero: Fail!

This was such a shocker, and awful timing I had to share. Gilbert Arenas has a self-help book for sale on Amazon at $16.50 apiece. Absolutely bad timing is my first thought followed by “what was he thinking. Below is an excerpt of the book, with my own comments.

Hello there. Yes, you. How are you? I am Gilbert Arenas. Thank you for picking up my book and opening the cover. You have just taken a major step toward improving your life.(Doubt it) What you hold in your hands is the self-help book to end all self-help books. The lessons found inside helped to take me, Gilbert Arenas, from being a skinny, overlooked high school basketball player, to being told in college that he wasn’t good enough to start, to being an NBA superstar.(then a felon)

I went from zero to hero. In fact, I went from zero to hero to Agent Zero.(to Zero $)

Who knows where this information will take you! Look where I am, and I didn’t have the advantage of having all this imparted to me in a book. (unfortunately)

Want to learn how to stay motivated each and every day of your life?

Want to learn the best way to shoot a free throw? (Gil was shooting 73% this season)

Want to learn how to speak to a woman like Agent Zero? (too funny for words)

All these answers—and many others—are inside.

My book is stuffed full of stories, tips, and anecdotes that will make you think, make you laugh, and make you cry (hopefully from laughter). I like to enjoy my life, and I think you will enjoy my book.

If you are a longtime Gilbert Arenas fan, buy this book. If you are or know a sports fan, buy this book. If you are hot and in need of a fan, buy this book and wave it back and forth in front of your face on the way up to the cash register to buy it.

Score Like Agent Zero is conversational, sometimes controversial, and always laugh-out-loud funny. I can’t guarantee that this book will help you score sixty points, but it will allow you to score an all-access pass into my mind and to the secrets behind my success.

All the information is in here. I wrote the book. Now you just have to read it.

The Truth Sports:NBA All-Star Starters & Reserves

NBA ALL-STAR 2010 STARTERS

WEST

Kobe Bryant, Carmelo Anthony, Steve Nash, Tim Duncan, and Amare Stoudemire

EAST

LeBron James, Allen Iverson, Dwayne Wade, Kevin Garnett, Dwight Howard

THE TRUTH SPORTS: NBA ALL-STAR 2010 RESERVES

In the West, Brandon Roy, averaging 23.4 points per game. His team is collapsing from injury at every moment yet the Blazers are competing in the West. Zach Randolph is averaging 20.7 points and 11.5 rebounds per game. No other big is putting up these numbers except for Dirk Nowitzki who will also be a reserve. Kevin Durant is a no-brainer,  Chris Paul would have been a starter had he not gotten hurt early in the season, but has rebounded back to 19.5 points, 11.2 dimes, and 2.3 steals. My favorite pick is Monta Ellis who is 6th in scoring in the league and has been playing like an All-Star this season. Chris Kaman was left off the ballot by the All-Star committee but that has stopped him from having his best season statistically.

In the East it was a little tougher choosing the bigs due to the lack of any real All-Stars aside from Chris Bosh, who is a lock for reserve. His teammate Andrea Bargnani is sadly joining him, only to make the game more interesting. His ability to shoot from deep makes the game sort of fun. The East centers are a sad bunch, but David Lee has been playing well for the Knicks and he will make his first All-Star apperance. The Atlanta Hawks Joe Johnson is averaging 21.3 points a game for the roller-caster Hawks and is a shoo-in. Gerald Wallace is participating in the Slam Dunk Contest(?) but should also be a reserve averaging 18.5 points and a whopping 11.3 boards a game. Derrick Rose and Rajan Rondo are the future of the NBA, and each is one of the biggest contributors on there teams. Both guys will be making there debuts at the 2010 All-Star Game.

The East wins this one in a blowout! The West has more important things on its mind…like winning the Finals!

The Truth Sports: NBA Power Rankings

Category NBA

1. Los Angeles Lakers: Kobe only scored 11 last night against Orlando but Lakers won easy. Bynum and Pau learning to play together…How Special!

2. Cleveland Cavaliers:  7-3 in their last 10 games. LeBron player of the month back-to-back, could be first to sweep award.

3. Boston Celtics:  Celtics waiting for playoffs to start, or until KG gets back to return to dominance.

4. Dallas Mavericks:  Strong comeback against Celtics. Could be dangerous when shots falling and playing defense as they did early in the season.

5. Denver Nuggets:  Melo is back!

6. Atlanta Hawks: Embarrassed Orlando early in the week, Jamal Crawford is playing the best basketball of his career. Now if they could just beat the Knicks!

7. San Antonio Spurs: Slowly aging before our eyes. Richard Jefferson looking a tad over-rated. Dejaun Blair looking a tad under-rated.

8. Portland Trail Blazers: No Bigs, No Problem. Nate Mcmillian gets the Blazers to the playoffs and its between him and Rick Adelmen for Coach of the Year!

9. Orlando Magic: The best center in the league Dwight Howard had 1 fg in the second half last night against Lakers. The Magic lead the league in 3-point attempts. 3-7 in their last            …WONDER WHY?

10. Phoenix Suns: Lost 4 straight, and Nash got beat out by T-Mac for All-Star starting job…..sad!

11. Houston Rockets: Everyone still holding breath about McGrady situation, Rockets need someone to help Brooks and Ariza when shots aren’t falling

12. Oklahoma City:  Kevin Durant playing like never before…a candidate for MVP, probably will receive Most Improved!

13. Utah Jazz:  Still strugling to stay consistent, but right in the thick of things in the West.

14. Memphis Grizzlies:  4 straight wins, including victories over Suns, and Spurs, big for team no one remembers. Zach Randolph our vote for All-Star Reserve.

15. Charlotte Bobcats: 5 straight wins, Stephen Jackson goes for 43 against Rockets, Gerald Wallace in Slam-Dunk contest for some unknown reason.

MLK Day: Staples Center Doubleheader!

On MLK Day I had to stop and buy an umbrella en route to the Staples Center to enjoy another back-to-back games for both Los Angeles teams the Clippers and the Lakers.

Photo by Noah Graham/NBAE via Getty Images

When it rains in Los Angeles the streets become scarce and getting to Staples Center was a breeze. The Staples Center was unexpectedly full of folks for the Clippers-Nets game. I was able to get tickets for $4.99. The game was worth less. The Clippers got off to an early lead, and the young, uncordinated Nets made the Clippers look better then they actually are. I fell asleep for most of the third and woke up with about 3 minutes remaining…thankfully I missed nothing. Couldn’t help but notice Blake Griffin moping around. The Nets missed 10 of their first 14 shots and finished at 45.8 percent from the field en route to their eighth wire-to-wire defeat this season. They never got closer than 11 points (with 45 seconds remaining), after Eric Gordon‘s layup gave the Clippers their biggest lead, 90-66, with 11:44 left. Clippers ran away with a 106-95 win.N ew Jersey has to win seven of its remaining 42 games to avoid tying the 1972-73 Philadelphia 76ers‘ 9-73 record for the worst in NBA history. How embarrassing for Jay-Z!

After the game the rain had stopped and let up long enough for the Lakers faithful to arrive without getting wet. I spent the in-between time across the street at ESPN Zone, stuck to my addiction, Arcade Basketball.

The Lakers-Magic game made the Clippers-Nets game look like an AAU game.

Photo by Noah Graham/NBAE via Getty Images

More celebrities, the darkened arena, and the sell-out crowd, made the Staples Center seem like a completely diffrent arena. Both the Lakers and Magic played aggressive and non-stop early. Kobe surprisingly struggled due to his finger and back injuries. Kobe Bryant had 11 points on 4-for-19 shooting. The 11 points are his second-lowest output this season. Bryant managed just four points in the first half before a 1-for-8 effort in the third quarter, falling well short of the 30 points he needed to become the youngest player in NBA history to score 25,000 points.

The Lakers bench came up big outscoring the Magic bench 42-15. The Magic once again played the Live by the 3, Die by the 3 philosophy and it failed. The Magic for some reason refuse to FEED Howard who had 24 points — but just one field goal after halftime. Lakers started the 4th on a 15-0 run and carried the momentum to a 98-92 win.

Unless Bryant goes nearly scoreless for the next month, he’ll be the youngest player to score 25,000 points. He also was the youngest player to score 23,000 and 24,000.

*Note to Los Angeles Clippers the Clippers Spirt Dancers are absolutely AWFUL!

Monta Ellis: King of H.O.R.S.E.!

We have all seen a multitude of trick shots, but Monta Ellis’ consistency at this shot is quite remarkable! Enjoy!

Jamal Crawford from DEEP & Friday Re-Cap!

13 games on the schedule Friday night for the NBA. 2 good games(Suns-Hawks, and Thunder- Mavs) the rest were passable.

The Phoenix Suns have almost set. Phoenix is 10-13 after beginning the season 14-3. They started hot early against Atlanta, but Atlanta in their roller-coaster fashion fought back to within 2, 101-99. Jamal Crawford take it away:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PIYe0agdKg

Jamal Crawford has been coming up BIG for the Hawks off the bench, and looks to make it to the playoffs for the first time in his 10-year career. The Hawks snapped a three-game losing streak against the Suns. *Note that is Jared Dudley getting J’d on!

The Oklahoma City Thunder had 8 wins by the 18th of January last season.

(Photo by Glenn James/NBAE via Getty Images)

This year they have already won 21 games. Much of the success of the Thunder falls heavily on Kevin Durant, who is an early  candidate for MVP. Against the Mavs he did his 30 point thing again which is his 18th time this season and 10th time in the last 12 games. But the final score Mavs 99- Thunder 98, was another one point loss to a Texas team. The Thunder lost on Wednesday to the Spurs 109-108. Cutting down on turnovers is the BIGGEST key to the Thunder growth. Kevin Durant is 3rd in the NBA in points per game(behind Lebron and Carmelo) and turnovers. Jason Kidd hit two 3-pointers and moved into a tie for fifth with Glen Rice on the all-time list with 1,559. Thats right Jason Kidd actually has made 1,559 three-pointers!

The New Jersey Nets lost to the Indiana pacers Friday night puts their losing streak at 7. They can add the 18, and 10 game losing streaks to that number. Their record sits at 3-36. Kiki Vandeweghe who took over as coach after the 0-18 streak, is 3-18. Great Job Kiki!! The Nets are now edging closer to the 1972 Philadelphia 76ers who won 9 games all season. The  76ers began the season with 15 straight losses(sound familiar), and also recorded losing streaks of 20, 14, and finally 13 to end the season. But Philly also proved it could win, taking a remarkable two in row and four of six in February. The Sixers finished 59 games behind the Celtics in the Eastern Division. The Nets are already 26 games behind the Celtics right now.

“Gaines and Losses” the movie!

The movie is entitled

“Gaines and Losses”

The Story of Sundiata Gaines

It begins like this:

V.O.(voiceover)

It was the first career 3-pointer for Gaines, a rookie who was just signed last week to a 10-day contract and was playing only his fifth NBA game. Gaines, known as “Yata” by his new teammates, scored all nine of his points in the fourth, against “Duke” LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers who Utah hasn’t beaten since Nov. 7, 2007.
